WHAT IS PARTNERS

IN RESEARCH?

Partners In Research is a program of research on therapies for

people with HIV/AIDS. Through Partners in Research, many New Mexicans

can participate in this research.

Funded since 1994, Partners in Research is a unit of the Community

Programs for Clinical Research on AIDS (CPCRA). The CPCRA is a

federal program with 15 units nationwide.

Partners in Research is designed to include groups that have

not usually been part of research trials. This includes women,

people of color, injection drug users, and those living in rural

areas.

WHAT IS CLINICAL

RESEARCH?

Clinical research means testing a treatment in humans. This research

plays a major role in discovering new and better therapies for

the treatment of HIV disease.

Medications are carefully tested in the laboratory before they

are used in clinical trials. Research participants are carefully

monitored during and after the study to ensure their safety. Participants

can leave a study at any time, for any reason.

SHOULD I PARTICIPATE

IN A CLINICAL TRIAL?

There are several reasons why people with HIV participate in clinical

trials. Some of those are:

  • People in a study participants may be some of the first to

be helped by a new medication

  • It offers the chance to help others
  • Most study costs are paid
  • Participants’ health is closely monitored by the research

    team

  • Transportation and childcare can be arranged for participants

    as needed

There are also important reasons why some people choose not

to join a trial:

  • The treatment may not have benefits
  • The treatment may be harmful or the drug may have side effects
  • A participant may be assigned to a study group that does

    not receive a treatment

For more information about participating in a clinical trial,

see Fact Sheet 204.
