WHAT IS THE INSURANCE

ASSISTANCE PROGRAM?

The New Mexico Insurance Assistance Program is designed to

help low-income people with HIV maintain their medical insurance

coverage.

The program pays up to $400 per month for the premiums of a

participating client’s existing health insurance. The program

also reimburses the patient’s share (co-pays) for HIV medications

included in the New Mexico Medication

Assistance Program (See Fact Sheet 331).

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

FOR THE INSURANCE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM?

The Insurance Assistance Program is designed to assist people

with HIV who currently have medical insurance and are in danger

of losing their ability to pay health insurance premiums due to

their HIV infection.

To be eligible, clients must:

  • Have an updated ACCESS form on file with the Department of

    Health.

  • Complete and submit an Insurance Assistance Program application
  • Have a gross monthly income of 300% of the federal poverty

level or less (currently $2,215 for a single person). Note: You

can find the current federal poverty guidelines on the Internet

    at: http://aspe.os.dhhs.gov/poverty/poverty.htm

  • Have cash assets of less than $10,000
  • Provide information about their current health insurance

    policy and benefits

HOW ARE CLIENTS

ENROLLED IN THE INSURANCE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM?

To enroll a client in the Insurance Assistance Program, their

case manager should complete the program application form and

submit it to the Department of Health.

NOTE: This program is intended to help

clients obtain and maintain health insurance coverage. If a client

is in danger of losing their health care coverage because they

can not pay the premiums, case managers should immediately contact

the Insurance Assistance Program manager and explain the situation,

even if supporting documentation is not yet complete.
