WHAT IS THE HIV EARLY

INTERVENTION PROGRAM?

HIV Early Intervention is a statewide Public Health program offering

direct services by specially trained registered nurses to HIV

infected clients including inmates in correctional facilities.

Client services revolve around a comprehensive care approach for

clients and their significant others with flexibility to ensure

care is individualized and client specific. Services include physical,

emotional, and educational support.

Physical support can include baseline physical assessment,

clinical and laboratory evaluation, monitoring of immune status,

immunization administration, tuberculosis testing, medication,

adherence follow-up, and referral-to primary care and to the appropriate

HIV Health Management Alliance (HMA).

Emotional support for client and significant others,

crisis intervention, and development of client support systems

are pivotal aspects of the comprehensive care offered by the EIP.

Educational interventions focus on disease management

health promotion and risk reduction plans, and immune system support.

Early Intervention Nurses are a key resource for clients in

accessing HMA services, primary care, clinical trials, and volunteer

agencies.

WHAT

ABOUT HIV PREVENTION?

The EIP is active in prevention activities throughout the state

including HIV testing, partner notification and identification,

post-exposure intervention for high risk public health clients,

needle exchange with clients who use intravenous drugs, and offering

training for other providers and community organizations. In addition,

liaison with HMAs involves assisting with client enrollment, collaboration

in assessing client needs, and home visits by referral.

HOW AND WHERE ARE SERVICES

AVAILABLE?

These services are confidential with no fee and are available

to all HIV infected residents of New Mexico. The network of nurses

located in each Public Health District assures clients uninterrupted

service regardless of where they are in the state.
